The Orange County Register wrote an article that I thought I should pass on.

The Internal Revenue Service is warning of a fraud scheme involving businesses and individuals that file their federal taxes electronically.

Some users of the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System have received an e-mail that claims their tax payment was rejected and directs them to a website for information. The website contains malware that attempt to infect the replier's computer.

"If you receive a message claiming to be from the IRS or EFTPS," the IRS warns here, please:

* Do not reply to the sender, access links on the site or submit any information to them.

* Forward the message immediately to us at phishing@irs.gov."

About 9.5 million businesses and individuals file their federal taxes using the EFTPS, a free system for filing taxes over the Internet or by phone, the IRS says.

The IRS requests anyone receiving a suspicious e-mail or discovering a website posing as the IRS to forward the e-mail or URL information to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.
